Aquaculture is a swiftly-growing food producing sector in the world and India is one of the major global players in fish and shrimp production. Aquaculture is under threat by various biotic (Bacterial and viral diseases) and Abiotic (pH, DO, ammonia levels etc.) factors that limit productivity. Shell fish and Crustaceans possess an immune system that is primitive, non-specific and lack adaptive immunity. However, they do possess quasi-immunity that helps clearing-off pathogens with haemocytes playing a major role in sequestering antigens and killing infectious agents. Shrimps produce metabolic wastes such as ammonia, nitrites, sulphitesetc. that are released into the pond. This results in higher BOD, COD and increased stress to the animal itself.
